Several years ago we were fostering a four year old child whose name was "Fansi." Though she was beautiful to look upon, once she opened her mouth her image changed drastically. Honestly, she spewed out of the fountain of her heart such hurtful homilies of who she was that the listener was rendered speechless. And when she wasn't cursing herself with self fulfilling epitaphs, she was disrespecting all who were in close proximity of her verbal barrage. Every morning when she got out of bed and came into the kitchen for breakfast, I would greet her the same way I greeted all my children, "Good morning!" Curling her lips in utter disdain, she would loudly declare ," I'm tired of looking at your dirty, ugly face!" Really? Now, I knew for sure my face was not dirty, and I was not accustomed to being referred to as "ugly." However, after several weeks of this daily destructive dialoge, I became increasingly unsure of what I looked like and of my worth. It was an amazing phenomenon that this small four year old daughter of Eve had such power over my psyche.
Point being made, words have power to impact how we perceive ourselves, for better or worse. That is exactly why we must replace these mental images formed by other's opinions with the image the Lord cherishes of us. Jesus paid an awesome price to recreate us in His image. We must allow the written and spoken Word of God to melt away those malignant images in our minds that contradict who we really are in Christ.
The following are a few of the Holy Scriptures that we should allow to re-define our self image:
