There are a several scriptural directives on prayer: “Pray without ceasing…Pray the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers…Pray that you be counted worthy to escape all these things and to stand before the Son of Man….Pray at all times in the Spirit…” Perhaps, one that is uppermost on my heart this morning is: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, May they be secure that love you.” ( Ps. 122:6)
In the tiny nation of Israel, a sacred patch of earth, known as the Temple Mount by the faithful, is the most contested piece of real estate in the world. Recognized for at least two millennium as the holy site of two Jewish Temples, this small acreage is also claimed as holy by the Islamists. History seems to be on the side of the Hebrews, but revisionists historians are daily trying to undermine their legitimate title deed.
As I was driving yesterday, I was listening to a debate on Fox News radio concerning this very subject. The supporter of the Palestinian up-rising made an astounding statement: “ …no one seriously believes that East Jerusalem belongs to Israel or has ever belonged to Israel….” REALLY? NO ONE? Lest we forget the Abrahamic covenant made by YWHW with Abraham, Father of the Hebrew Nation, we should be reminded that all the land of Canaan, (which encompasses ALL the of what we now recognize as the Nation of Israel and also Greater Israel) was given to Abraham and his descendants forever. (Gen. 17:8 “The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.”) Sometimes, truth is hard to find; especially if you are not looking in the right places or listening to the right voices. Jesus warned , “…be careful how you hear.”
According to I Kings 15:4, …”for David’s sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him, and establishing Jerusalem.” David conquered the Jebusites in 1052 BC (I Chron. 11:4-9) and Jerusalem became the eternal capital of Israel from that point. Even though various and sundry armies have invaded and displaced the Jewish people throughout the ages, The Lord’s promise has not been revoked. YHWH assured David’s son Solomon, at the dedication of the Temple (which was located on the Temple Mount, in Jerusalem) “I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou has made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there forever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.” (italics added) In addition, the Prophet Isaiah declares: “For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and you land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you and your land shall be married. For as a young man married a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoice over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you…” (Chapter 62:1-12).
Is it any wonder that such conflict swirls continually around Mr. Zion? All that the Lord declares belongs to Him, the enemy tries to commandeer; from the individual soul to the mountains of Israel. Of course, the devil is a liar and the father of lies. Therefore, the adherents to Islam are compelled to move against the anointing that rests on the chosen seed. They are without dispute the “Johnny come latelies.” By there own admission they have had no presence in Jerusalem until the seventh century after Christ. It is historically accurate to say the followers of Mohammed conquered Jerusalem in 638 AD, this was 60 years after Muhammed died in Medina, having never even seen the Holy Land of Israel (Mohammed did claim he visited Jerusalem in a dream) . We should note that while the Quran does not have even one reference to the Holy City within its verses, the Holy Bible references Jerusalem more than 60 times. And what is very significant is that Yashua, our Savior, has promised to return with his feet on the Mt. of Olives to rule and reign from the Holy City ( Luke 1:26-28, Zachariah 14:4, Is. 2:1-4, Is. 9:6-7, Is. 24:21-23).
It is because of the promise of the Almighty that the evil one incites the counterfeit faith to rise up and declare ownership. But, it is not just Islam. The Bible declares that the whole of the family of nations will be tested upon this stone. “ On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves.” (Zechariah 12:3) The eyes of nations rest on Jerusalem as do the eyes of the Lord. It is this very reason we are admonished to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem. May they be secure that love you.” Our prayers for Jerusalem please the Father and have a dual effect of securing our own safety. Let us pray without ceasing.
