"The word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than a two edged sword piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Hebrews 4:12
Many people disregard the power of the written word of God. They do not esteem it as Holy and Living. We could include many Christians as well. Failing to saturate themselves in the wisdom, knowledge and understanding of the Holy Spirit that breathes life onto it's pages, they regard the Bible as just another book among books. This is done to their own peril and impoverishment. The light of God's Word has been given to us as inspired by the Holy Spirit and profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the people of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." (II Timothy 3:16)
This verse in Hebrews boldly states that the Word of God will divide between soul and spirit. In the worldly atmosphere that saturates our lives, the things of the soul and the things of the spirit are often meshed, tangled and impossibly entwined. How are we to know which is which without the light of God's Word illuminating the difference? When we are not reading and applying His Word on a daily basis the soul and spirit become best friends. Unfortunately, the soul's voice often bullies the spirit's "still small voice" into complete silence.
A prominent example is the raging battle we are surrounded by concerning same-sex marriage. The soulish realm cries out for "tolerance" and "equality." It makes a case for marriage as an expression of soulish discretion between any two humans that "love" each other, regardless of gender. The Spirit on the other hand is quick to remind the soul that our ways are not God's ways, indeed, His ways are higher than ours ( Is. 55:8-9) . The Spirit stands strong against the cultural push to satisfy the soulish desires of fallen man. When the soulish eye-glasses are removed and the eyes of the heart are opened and honestly read God's Handbook concerning marriage, we clearly see and understand: Leviticus 18:22, "Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin. (NLT) Leviticus 20:13 "If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act' (NLT) I Corinthians 6:9-11 "Don't you know that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God" Don't fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people , or drunkards or are abusive, or cheat people-none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (NLT) The Word of God is not silent on homosexuality, as some claim, but speaks to those, who by the Spirit, have ears to hear.
The next phrase from Hebrews 4:12 also declares that the Word will divide between bone and marrow. Contemplating this phrase, the Holy Spirit asked me the difference between bone and marrow. "The bone is what can be felt and physically identified with our senses. The marrow, however, is hidden within the bone." Exactly.
Being "sense" oriented, pushes us to discount the unseen elements of our world. The Word of God cautions us with the following: "While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." (2 Cor. 4:18) The Word of God rightly divides the essential from the non-essential, the temporary from the everlasting, the physical from the spiritual. Without the laser-light of the Word of God highlighting our path we become confused and disoriented: right becomes wrong, wrong becomes right, good becomes evil, evil becomes good . The soul wants to dominate the spirit just as the bone would hide the essentiality of the marrow. However, it is the unseen things that truly dominate our world and must be recognized and dealt with.
The Word of God is our defense from becoming "secularized." From becoming slowly boiled to death in the ever increasing heat of the world's passions, just like the proverbial frog in the pan of water that increased it's temperature so slowly that comfort became his demise.
The Word of God, walk in it's light and live! AMEN!
