He was both mother and father to his children; they were his priority. He had done the very best by them: beautiful, spacious surroundings, plenty of food, and quality time in communication every evening. They were his pride and joy, the crown of all his efforts.
His story, however, is not without disappointment, pain and betrayal. Both his son and his daughter chose to walk away from all he had provided. They chose rebellion over obedience.
His name: YHWH.
His children: Adam and Eve.
Even though He was a perfect parent, even though provision was opulent, they sided with the demands of their flesh, to their, and our, detriment.
Adam and Eve were not only the first people, but the first prodigals. Running from His presence they hid themselves in fear and covered themselves with clothes of their own design. Even so, they were naked and ashamed.
We all have prodigals in our own family lines. Even as you read this, your mind is able to bring up names and faces of those loved ones that are in the far county eating from the pig pen. Perhaps, you are shaking your head at the deception they have embraced. So easy to “see” where they have gone astray.
NEWSFLASH: We have all been the prodigals. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Lest we forget, take a short walk down memory lane. Not the past roads of success and happiness, but the detours. The broad super highway we found ourselves on that we had no idea how we got there or how to get off; that dark avenue of angst and failure. That dimly lit path apart from the Word of God and His Holiness that seemed so bright.
Yes. We all, at some point in this journey called life, were walking in the wrongness of our own sinful desires.
Perhaps, you are protesting ,”Well, I was never THAT bad! I never did______________.” Unfortunately, the standard is not another failed individual. The standard is the Standard-bearer: THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, the spotless Lamb of God. Please remember, all of our righteousness is as filthy rags before him. (Is. 64:6)
GOOD NEWS: He came to seek and to save those that were lost. If you can identify with having “lost your way,” you can be saved. Only those who refuse to humble themselves, only those who refuse to agree with His assessment of humankind remain in arrogant deception. “I did not come to call the righteous but the sinners.” (Luke 5:32) And, “it is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick.” (Matt. 9:12)
Admitting our need for Him is the battle of every prodigal; it is every man’s crossroad. Many times it is the “pride of life” that keeps us parked in the pig sty. But, humility and repentance puts us on the path back to the Father.
If you are the one eating out of a trough instead of sitting at the table, pray this prayer: “Father, I repent for leaving my first love. Forgive me for going my own way instead of Your way. I desire to be in your presence more than I desire to satisfy my flesh. Father, cleanse me and set my feet upon a rock and establish my goings; put a new song in my mouth so that many will see and fear and come to know the Lord. Amen.”
If your loved one is living far from the Father’s favor, call their name before the throne every morning and at noontime and before you fall asleep at night. Be that persistent widow that Jesus described in Luke 18:1-8. The judge finally granted the widow’s constant cry for justice because she “wearied” him by the continual coming. But, Jesus, assures us in our quest for restoration that surely Father God delights in bringing about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to Him day and night.
I hope the following scriptural declarations will assist you as you battle for the soul of your beloved. Be faithful in your assignment---if not you, who?
Standing in the gap.
