The Plight of America
“Houston, we have a problem.” We have all heard this phrase and probably used it sometime over the past thirty years. It originated in 1970, with the crew of the Apollo 13 moon flight, in order to communicate a major technical problem to NASA in Houston. Although the “problem” was fixable (an exploded oxygen tank, or as relayed from space: “we have a main B bus undervolt.”) there were moments between the explosion of the oxygen tank and re-entry into earth’s stratosphere that could have cost the crew their lives.
“Church, we have a problem.” The statistics you are about to read will undoubtedly take the oxygen out of the room just as the exploded oxygen tank on Apollo 13 deprived the astronauts of breathable air. The “problem” reported to Mission Control was alleviated by a concerted effort of the spacecraft crew in outer-space and hundreds of scientists and technicians in Houston. Is the Body of Christ in America willing and or able to mount such a synergistic response?
According to reporter Chris Fisher of Charisma Magazine, (research from the Guttmacher Institue,) ”Almost three-quarters of women obtaining abortions in 2008 reported a religious affiliation. The largest proportion were Protestant (37 percent) and …Catholic (28 percent), or that they had no specific religious affiliation (27 percent). One in five abortion patients identified themselves as born-again, evangelical , charismatic, or fundamentalist… It is estimated that one in three adults in America today is the parent of an aborted child.”
So how has a problem of this magnitude unknowingly overwhelmed the Body of Christ and how will Father God respond?
Having been a part of the Body for several decades and involved with the Pro-life movement on several different levels , there are observations to be made. Perhaps, the most glaring is the apathy and indifference to the plight of the pre-born in America by the Protestant branch of the Church. For the most part, we have allowed our Catholic brothers and sisters to carry the ball on this issue. There are a few bright spots in the evangelical network, such as Crisis Pregnancy Centers and adoption awareness, but otherwise there is a deafening silence. Preoccupation with other “more important” issues have diverted the attention of pastors and parishioners alike to the silent scream of both the “hidden with child” and the hidden child within.
The god of convenience has received the blood of millions of babies that were sacrificed by their mothers whom claimed to know the Lord. Many of the Christian women seeking abortion identified themselves as pregnant, married, but not carrying their husband’s child. Shame and guilt often fuels the irrevocable flames of abortion. Preferring to hide their sin of adultery with the sin of murder they follow in King David’s footsteps; with one exception. King David was openly confronted with his sin, granted forgiveness and cleansed of his sin through repentance. He was healed and restored (Psalms 51) Most post abortive Christian women, however, will carry their secret to the grave. Without repentance and reconciliation, this dark blight breeds many emotional, physical and spiritual burdens . Anonymity extracts a heavy price.
And why should we care? Because the shedding of innocent blood has a direct impact on the future of the Church and of America. Consider that approximately 55 million (conservative estimate) Americans are missing due to abortion on demand. Just the economics of this issue are huge. Since 1973 when Roe V Wade swept away state’s rights to restrict abortion, we have lost a generation. We have lost 17 percent of our workforce to abortion on demand. We have lost pastors, priests, missionaries, Sunday School teachers, worship leaders, praise team members, deacons, deaconesses, elders, evangelists, apostles and bishops. Our culture has been deprived of doctors, lawyers, teachers, scientists, businessmen/women, entrepreneurs, inventors, soldiers, generals, firemen, policemen, electricians, plumbers, architects, authors, poets, actors/actresses, musicians, dancers, servers, laborers and construction workers. We are missing mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, sisters and brothers, cousins, aunts and uncles. We have impoverished our culture with a loss that is so great that we can never find compensation. We think we are increased , well-clothed and rich but we have become diminished, naked and poor.
And what is most important, we have provoked the ire of the Almighty. Surely, if the Father of all souls severely chastened the nation of Israel for child sacrifice should not America be the recipient of divine retribution as well? Consider the following scriptures from the Holy bible:
“ You shall not give any of your children to offer them to Moloch, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.” Lev. 18:21
“You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way, for every abominable thing that the Lord hates they have done for their gods, for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.” Deut. 12:31
“And you took your sons and your daughters, whom you had borne to me, and these you sacrificed to them to be devoured. Were you whorings so small a matter that you slaughtered my children and delivered them up as an offering by fire to them? Ezekiel 16:20-21
“They sacrificed their sons and their daughter to the demons, they poured out innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood.” Psalms 106:37-38
Just examining the verses above we observe several important points: 1) the willing destruction of children profanes the name of the Lord, 2) the willing destruction of children is an abomination, 3) children belong to the Lord, 4) the blood of the innocent pollutes the land. We can safely assert, therefore, that abortion profanes the name of the Lord, is an abomination to the Lord, and the willful destruction of children, which belong ultimately to the Lord, pollutes the land. Is it also safe to say, with the blood of 55 million plus aborted children’s blood soaking the ground of the United States of America, that our land is defiled and ripe for the consequences of sin?
Remember the blood of Able? It cried out with such intensity that it captured the attention of the Almighty in heaven. As recorded in Genesis, Chapter Four, verses nine through eleven: “And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Able thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper? And he [the Lord] said, What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother’s blood cries unto me from the ground. And now art thou cursed from the earth; which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand.” Perhaps, we should ask ourselves, how loud are the cries that are continually ascending before the throne from the blood saturated states of America?
Now, we understand that the whole of the United States of America is polluted with the blood of aborted children. How is the Lord of all the earth obligated to respond? According to the scriptures, when a land becomes polluted, it reacts by vomiting out the inhabitants. (Leviticus 18:25) Additionally we read in Numbers 35:33: “So you shall not pollute the land in which you are; for blood pollutes the land and no expiation can be made for the land for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of him who shed it.” And again in Jeremiah 16:18: “I will first doubly repay their iniquity and their sin, because they have polluted My land; …” How can America escape judgement?
Someone recently asked me if I thought the Lord would grant forgiveness to our nation as he granted forgiveness to Nineveh. To which I responded, if America repents like Nineveh repented… yes: “ And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sack cloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. For the word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him and covered him with sackcloth and sat in ashes. And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the King and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast herd nor flock taste anything: let them not feed, nor drink water: But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way and from the violence that is in their hands. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not. (Jonah 3-10))
It is hard to truly repent until the sin has been fully admitted. Until the Church cries out with an anguished voice of sorrow for the hidden acceptance of abortion there will be no forgiveness. “For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins. But a certain fearful looking for of judgement and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy who hath trodden underfoot the Son of God and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified , an unholy thing and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace. For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongs to me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Hebrews 10:26-32)
“Church….. we have a problem.”
