Epiphany: …a sudden, intuitive perception of or insight unto the reality or essential meaning of something, usually initiated by some simple, homely, or commonplace occurrence or experience…(www.dictionary.reference.com)
I experienced this, an epiphany that is. Sitting, having my hair cut last Thursday, the stylist asked me about the candidates for the Republican nomination. Musing out loud, I said : “Well, we have Trump and Cruz…A trumpet and a cross.” Then my mind kind of went into overdrive. I had not intended to utter those words, but that’s exactly what came out. As my friend chatted on about current events my spirit raced ahead formulating the following:
“What does a trumpet do? It makes a loud and distinct sound; it alerts people. In our not so distant past the US Calvary used trumpeters, buglers if you will, to call the enlisted to attention. It was the particular notes played that let the soldiers know the necessary action that needed to be taken: a call to arms, advance, retreat, eat, rest, arise, …etc…. Is the Lord using this “Trump” for the same purpose?”
Whether you like the notes Mr. Trump is playing or not, you have to admit he is sounding the alarm. Who else has had the brash boldness to call for the restriction of Muslim immigrants (which by the way have been flooding into our country since 2001). Which candidate has unashamedly declared the border fence needs to be built and Mexico needs to pay for it. What about that “abrasive scale” he played demanding ALL illegal immigrants deported? Isn’t that the law that is on our books? What about that sweet chord that stirred our hearts: “Let’s make America great again.” Is this “Trumpet” a sound from the Lord? Just asking….
Interesting enough, as I returned home to my computer I researched the meaning of Mr. Trump’s first name I discovered this: “The name DONALD is a Scottish baby name. In Scottish the meaning of the name is ‘Great Chief, world mighty.’”(www.google.com) Also, in googling “trump” I found the following from the Merriam-Webster online dictionary: “Definition of trump: 1a: a card of a suit any of whose cards will win over a card that is not of this suit called also a trump card; b: the suit whose cards are trumps for a particular hand—often used in plural. 2:a decisive overriding factor or final resource---called a trump card.”(Emphasis mine)
Now the Holy Spirit really has my attention. So here we have a very out spoken candidate that is in all respects the “anti-establishment” candidate. He says things no one else dares say and in a way that is sometimes rude and blustery. And, his ratings soar after every so called “faux pas.” Is this a “sign” and “a wonder?” All the political analysts predicted Trump would disappear in weeks of his announced candidacy. Hmm, his numbers are still high and strong. Is the Lord using Trump? The Bible is clear about leadership: “For promotion comes neither form the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the Judge: He brings down one and exalts another.” Ps. 75:7
What about Cruz? Cruz is the Spanish word for “cross.” La Cruz…the cross. Ted Cruz. Back to google. “The name Ted is a French baby name. In French the meaning of the name Ted is: ‘Prosperous protector.” And has that definition, in part, defined Senator Cruz’s political stance. He is a strict constitutionalist. He has been defending the letter of the law, protecting freedoms from the time he was the Solicitor General in Texas to his current bid for President of the United States.
And what about “Cruz?” The “cross.” The world recognizes the “cross” as the universal symbol for Christianity. We wear it on necklaces, rings, and lapel pins. It adorns our cemeteries and our churches. It is a sign both of death and life; of denial and of victory. The cross. La Cruz. Wikipedia: “ In contemporary Christianity , the cross is a symbol of the atonement and reminds Christians of God’s love in sacrificing his own Son for humanity. It represents Jesus’ victory over sin and death, since it is believed that though his death and resurrection he conquered death itself.” In this hour we need to embrace the Cross of the Lord Jesus Christ, in more than in a symbolic sense.
My “epiphany” was the “trump” and the “cross.” I understand we need both. The Lord has raised up two, very distinct voices in this trying time. If we have eyes to see and ears to hear we will recognize the message in both. I am not endorsing a candidate. As far as I am concerned, “we have no King but Jesus.” That being said, we are called to be “in the world and not of the world.” We must be salt and light or the world is unpreserved and dark. It does appear to me, that the Lord is using these two men to stir the conscious of a nation and to remind all : “The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of people.” (Daniel 4:17)
In this hour we need both the message of “The Trump” and the message of “The Cross.” Most of all we need “The Lord.”
“Even so come quickly Lord Jesus.” Revelation 22:20
