I found the container of "hosts" that I use when I take the sacraments to the inmates at the county jail. Gently removing one small wafer, I smelled of it--it had been a very long time since I had sought solace here. Surprisingly, the uniqueness of it's fragrance stirred my sorrowing soul.
I placed it between my thumb and forefinger, folded my hands in an attitude of prayer and began to speak softly to the Lord. Tears accented my syllables, coursing down my cheeks and falling slowly, making small pools on the granite counter--pools not unlike the Pool of Bethesda, where the maimed and infirm lay waiting for the Angel of the Lord.
I felt the need to confess. So I began: "Forgive me of fear...fear of death...fear of heart failure...fear of skin cancer...fear of not sleeping...fear of failure...fear of falling...fear of bringing reproach upon Your name..." I quoted the Words of Our Lord at the Passover Meal before His Passion was poured out: "Take, eat; this is my body; take, drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sin."
The Living Word began to warm my heart and my mind was filled with the antidote to my fear: HIS FAITH. "For even when You are faithless, I remain faithful. The life that you now live you live by MY faith, because I love you and gave myself for you."
Fear of death? To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. (II Cor. 5:8)
You shall not die, but live and declare the works of the Lord. (Ps. 118:17)
That through death I have destroyed him who had the power of death, that , is the devil. And
I have delivered those, that through fear of death, have been in all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Fear of heart failure? Wait on me and be of good courage and I will strengthen your heart. Ps. 27:14
Fear of skin cancer? Your skin shall be fresher than a child's and the firmness of your youth restored. Job 33:25
Fear of not sleeping? Behold I give my beloved sleep. Ps. 127:2
You shall both lay down in peace and sleep; for I only make you dwell in safety.
Fear of falling? Now give praise unto Me, for I AM able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless
before the presence of His Glory with exceeding joy. Jude 1:24-25
Fear of failure? Now, give thanks unto God, who always makes you to triumph in ME, and makes manifest my Salvation
II Cor. 2:14
Fear of bringing reproach upon His Name: And if you sin, you have an Advocate with the Father, Myself, The Lord Jesus
Christ. I John 2:1
If you confess your sin, I am faithful and just to forgive you your sin and cleanse you from all
unrighteousness. I John 1:9
The cup is now empty, but my heart is full.
"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God."
