The Bible tells us that "a good name is more to be desired than great riches." (Proverbs 22:1) Names are important and the character associated with the name is inseparable. When your name is tainted with bad credit, corruption or infidelity, your whole life is diminished. At one point our third daughter consulted us concerning a career change. A new-comer to our community had offered her a job that seemed, on the surface, like a great opportunity. However, after I did a simple "google search" it became apparent that this individual had an outstanding reputation for participating in scams. In fact, he was known under five (5) different aliases. When we advised her against associating with him, she was hesitant to pass up the advancement in her career. We tried to get her attention by asking her why she thought a person would have five (5) different names on the public records. She chose to remain silent, so we filled in the blanks for her... when a person messes up their name in the business world, they often try to recover by changing names and continuing their pursuits under cover of another title. We told her that her grandfather had been doing business for over 75 years (he is 91 and still working) and only used one name. His name is his guarantee. His name precedes him announcing his integrity and honest work ethics. His good name provides a safety net to those that would enter into a business arrangement with him. Thankfully, she did not quit her longstanding job to work for this man; and he soon was exposed publicly in the community as a fraud.
The Lord's Name reveals to us who He is and about His character. God Almighty, graciously allows us to call him by His given name: " Jehovah" or in the Hebrew: Yahweh. "That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH (Yahweh) art the most high over all the earth." Psalms 83:18 In allowing us to know Him by name, He is also inviting us to know His character: "That we may know thy ways upon earth: thy salvation in all nations." (Ps. 66:3) The following names are those that the Lord, Himself gave in demonstration of His watch-care over the children of man:
1) Jehova-Jirah: "The Lord will Provide." Gen. 22:14
2) Jehova-Nissi: " The Lord my Banner." Ex. 17.15
3) Jehova-Shalom: "The Lord send Peace." Judges 6:24
4) Jehova-Shammah: "The Lord is There." Ezek. 48:34
5) Jehova-Tsid-kenu: " The Lord our Righteousness) Jer. 23:6
6) Jehova-Rapha: "The Lord our Healer." Ex. 15:26
7) Jehova-Sabaoth: "The Lord our Protector" Psalms 46:7
8) Jehova-Raah: "The Lord our Shepherd" Psalms 23
Inside of the Lord is abundantly supplied all that we need and all that we will ever need. He is the "strong tower" that houses the answers to all of life. When we run to Him we will never be disappointed. And we do not have to "run" very far because Jesus said, " I am with you always even unto the end of this age." In acknowledging His presence in each moment of our lives we are acknowledging His ability to meet every need. He is not only able, but willing. Amen.
